This is a transition point, the front line, where the ice sheet melts and feeds back into the sea. There were a number of elements that Peter considered when taking this photograph including the sound and force of the water and the sheer face and colour of the ice. The water thundered approximately forty metres from the top of the ice into the sea. Whilst it is something that occurs constantly, especially during the summer months, it can also be used as a symbol of the not so slowly vanishing permanent ice in the polar region.

Peter Geraerts

Peter is a photographer and environmentalist. His work discusses our precious natural landscape, our impact on the planet and the positive benefits of the wilderness on our wellbeing. Inspired as a boy by pioneering explorers, he has gone on to visit some of the most remote parts of our planet. Despite seeing evidence of retreating sea ice and tonnes of plastic getting into the food chain, he has chosen to provoke change by focusing on the raw beauty of the wilderness at the planet’s fringes.
